Digger's is my favorite steak place - of several - in La Crosse. They always cook it to perfection as ordered. Drinks are poured on the heavy side - even for premium scotch - at a fair price. Ambience is 60s Hollywood, with very friendly and attentive staff. I've not had the ribs, but they are reputedly the best in town. I love the garlic red smashed potatoes, and the grilled shrimp cocktail with ginger soy dip is outstanding. Better have a reservation for Saturday night, or if there is an event in town, or you can eat at the bar which offers a great sirloin steak sandwich.

Best restaurant in downtown area. I always get the extra grilled veggies on side instead of potatoes. They are excellent. Only place I would order fresh fish. The chef here knows how to cook fresh fish. Soy Ginger sauce is really good. Scrumptous garlic toast served before meal goes great with the clam chowder. Great steaks too. Half the price of the Waterfront and twice as good.

Supper clubish menu with a charming retro atmosphere and great service. MENU Very well known for their fish and meat dishes that I hear are always great. They do have vegetarian options, not a lot, but they do have them on the menu. I highly recommend their salads, especially for lunch. Not only are they tasty, they are VERY generous in size. SERVICE Every server we've had has been knowledgeable of the menu, very nice, and always helpful.

It's been a long time since I dined at Digger ' s Sting. Shame on me. I'd forgotten was a great restaurant it is. I ordered the Prime Rib and Nairagi fish combo. Both rare and so flavorful! Our whole party ordered prime rib with different fish and we were all very happy. Garlic toast was crunchy on the outside and fresh, my spinach salad was super fresh, and the steamed veggies weren't overcooked. The service was incredible! Yes, our meal wasn't cheap. We didn't WANT a cheap meal in a noisy chain served by someone who didn't know what they were doing. We took our time, savored our meals, and had a great time. We won't wait so long to return.

Really cool and pretty supper club style place. It's kind of expensive, but the Moscow Mule is a really weird and delicious drink and the alfredo sauce is amazing. The waitstaff was very nice and attentive, but the hostess was wearing leggings as pants without a long shirt or short dress over them which is totally not OK.

Interesting place, old time era. Food was very good. Ribeye was perfect. I sat at the bar, bartender, Lisa was very rude. Don't expect to order off of the regular menu at the bar. She pitched a fit said they were busy, 6 people in the restaurant. She relented and then began trying to hurry me out the door. She wanted to talk with her friends at the bar instead of work. I travel for business and dine out for weeks in a row. Best steak in a long time, worst bartender ever.

Had a great dinner at The Sting with friends. Great seafood and ribs. Booked a designated driver Mr. Trip-It Limousine Service of Westby to make the evening complete.

Repeat visits prove the value proposition. Great service? Check. Friendly bartenders that know how to pour them right? Check. Classic supper club decor, with just the right frisson of cheeze? Check. But wait, there's more: the food here is killer. Tender filet mignon, topped with lump crab meat and a perfectly executed beurre blanc sauce. Scallops seared to tender and not a whit more. Top sirloin, cooked perfectly medium rare. That basket of garlic toast, so addictive it's eaten in a flash. A fairly priced wine list with something for everyone. This past weekend I ate at Digger's Sting two nights in a row, and if I didn't have to return home to MN I'd be eating there tonight. Seriously, one of my favorite restaurants on the planet.

The filet mignon is excellent (mushrooms are too salty). The Canadian Walleye is amazing, and melts in your mouth. Entrees are around $20-$30. I wouldn't advise visiting within 30 minutes of closing time, or you might feel rushed.

Interesting place. Funky outside decor followed by some cool old school decor inside. The wait staff was fantastic. I had the sirloin and shrimp which were both good. The sides were ok. I got the garlic mashed potatoes and they were missing something. The garlic bread is probably the best I have had - the garlic bread is extremely garlic buttery. After being at the restaurant for a bit the funky decor goes from being cool to feeling outdated.

The seafood specials were not very tasty. I ordered the grilled ono (catch of the day) and it was overcooked and rubbery. My husband's blackened ono smelled very fishy (not fresh). However, others in my party of 6 ordered prime rib, walleye, and batter fried cod, which were all quite amazing. Clam chowder was ok and the cracked pepper salad dressing was really delicious. One thing I really didn't understand was the garlic butter bread. It didn't have much garlic flavor and tasted like over-baked, over-buttered bread. (Maybe that's a Wisconsin thing). Drinks were good. Great decor--reminded me of an old bar in NYC. Service was ok--staff were mostly young people--who were chatting/hanging out at the second bar in the back of the restaurant. All in all, I enjoyed some things, was disappointed by other aspects, but would come back to try the traditional menu items (like prime rib and batter fried cod).

Love the atmosphere at Diggers. Make sure to sit on the right side of the restaurant by the bar, the little deck they have is the best place to sit. The left side can get drafty. Their fried fish is really good, and I've always liked their spaghetti. Wish they still put the bell peppers in the sauce though. Their steaks, are just so-so, I've always found them to be a little bland however. Wish they'd add more seasoning and kick the heat up a notch. Also, one of my favorite items, the Digger Burger, they replaced with the Digger Steak Sandwich! The steak sandwich is really good, but bring back the burger!

We love Digger's. The kitschy decor has not been updated since the early to mid-1970s -- literally. But excellent cocktails prepared by true bartenders. The food is very good. The chef is Hawaiian, and the seafood special is always good. I am also partial to the batter-fried shrimp -- huge and excellent. I also like their ribs. While it is not haute cuisine, it very good and far less expensive than comparable venues in large cities. Our Beverly Hills reviewer did not comment on the very reasonable prices as compared to Mortons, etc. Plus the staff is friendly and bend-over-backward accommodating! We are regulars.

My girlfriend and I went to this restaurant on my grandfather's recommendation. The price was a little high, but it was well worth it. I got the scallops and they were actually cooked perfectly, which is a rare feat. She got the shrimp, and they were the most delicious shrimp either of us have ever tasted! Whatever they use to season the shrimp is superb! The restaurant often gets mistaken for a dive bar because of its quaint and mediocre exterior, and the fact that it's in a college town. But at night the owner employs a door man to keep out the drunken coeds and bums. The restaurant has some history as well. The restaurant was named after Paul Neuman's film "The Sting" because Paul was coming to town for a political rally and my grandfather went to pick him up at the train station. He took him to see the restaurant and upon seeing the name Paul was annoyed and decided it was not a fitting tribute. Obviously, he never tried the shrimp.

I have been in La Crosse for work the last few weeks, and have sampled quite a bit of downtown offerings while staying at the Radisson. Great steaks, and old school atmosphere. Been there with groups and got great food and service, but tried to go once by myself only to be disappointed they will basically only serve appetizers at the bar. I won't ding them for my ignorance, but an FYI for any other travelers.

As amazing as it gets. Wonderful drinks-I like the Sophia Lauren. The atmosphere is classic movie swank. It looks like a DIVE outside, but it is so worth going in--GO IN! I always get the filet (because its ZOMG good) or the fresh fish special. They serve escargots, but the thing that makes me go SQUEE! is this Garlic Bread. I don't know what they do to it, but it is A-MAZ-ING! People talk about Piggy's, Freighthouse, and Waterfront (and I eat often at these places and they are great), but for me--the HANDS DOWN best food in town and best steak for sure is DIGGERS!!!! PS-they have the best waitress in town by far. I always forget her name but she has long dark hair and is wonderful. Perfect timing, impeccable service, wonderful recommendations. She rocks!

My husband and I went to Digger's Sting for a much-needed night out, and were very happy with the results. We're used to Chicago-quality dining establishments, and were pleased that Digger's was on par, if not better, than a Chicago steakhouse. I chose the special of the night, a teriyaki petite steak, and my husband had the ribs. The steak was tender and perfectly prepared at medium, and the sides complemented the dish. The ribs were reported as spicy and not dry, with a nice sauce as complement. Service was fast and polite, and the table we had by the window was very comfortable. I will definitely go back.

If you are so "fortunate" to live in Beverly Hills, Ca, why would you ever venture to Wi? Stay home. Diggers does a fine job. Service and food are excellent and the price of a great steak is not the unbelievable cost of places like Ruth's Chris Steak House. Salads are cold and crisp, seafood cooked properly and served hot, steaks are cooked to order and portions are more than ample. I love the place.

We've been to Digger's several times; service, food, and drinks have always been great! We go there for "special" occassions and have not been disappointed. It's sorta like an old time supper club - but with upgraded interior. Steaks (or steak sandwiches) are fabulous. Don't let the outside look of the restaurant or the fact it's located amongst several just straight bars fool you - inside is very nice.

I have no idea where or what these other reviewers are eating. I say that not to be mean, but to be really honest. I always complain that Madison, Wisconsin is a place where time stopped around 1985. Well, in LaCrosse, time has stood still since the early 70's. This is so weird because if you travel to the east side, Onalaska, it is just chain stores, Target, Starbucks, etc. Anyway, so I ventured into Digger's Sting. I should have been smart enough to go to Outback in Onalaska. Steakhouses in this vein, have been replaced in most cities with the chains of Ruth's Chris or Morton's. Which can be good or bad depending on where you are. A really good steakhouse is a tough find. Smith & Wollensky, Ruth's Chris, Morton's, most major cities have at least one probably two of the above. The Capital Grille and the Daily Grill are also popping up in cities across the US. I am talking about a really good local steak house, a la Peter Luger. Digger's Sting is not anything close to what I am talking about. The garlic bread that Sheryl C "squee" about is nothing but a greasy loaf of bread. The filet was just okay, nothing really great. It tasted okay, but it wasn't truly grilled on fire. It was probably cooked in a a so-so broiler, not even a Salamander. The garlic mashed potatoes were inedible. The salad was just an ordinary salad. I guess for LaCrosse it is something special. For the real world, it is less than acceptable.

Simply the best fine dining in La Crosse. The decor reminds me of a 1950's supper club and the servers are phenomenal and very knowledgeable about the specials and the menu. They are mostly known for their delicious prime rib. I usually order one of the fish specials, last time I was there I had the swordfish that was served with a ginger teriyaki sauce. Soooo good! This is always my 1st choice for any special occasion meals.

My wife and I have been to Digger's Sting 5 times, most recently in January, 2011. She has had beef of various sorts each time and reports it to be good. I've had one of the fish specials each time and all have been excellent. The sea food isn't as good as at Joe's, Steak, Crab and Sea Food, but it's as good as or better than at Catch 35 (both expensive Chicago restaurants). Side items are good also. We prefer Digger's over Piggy's, and the Freight House in La Crosse and the Tradition's in Onalaska.

Home of consistently the best meals I've had in La Crosse. They have a good bar (the "Moscow Mule," a mix of vodka and lemon/lime served in a copper cup, is their house drink and should be sampled sparingly), and a decent wine selection. The menu is limited and uninspired, but they have 4 or 5 specials every night, and their fish special is always great. The snow crab & artichoke dip (served with warm foccacia bread, along with a basket of their locally famous garlic toast that comes with every meal) is a great way to start your meal, and their tiramisu is a knee-weakening way to wrap it all up.
